Celebrating Colorado Gives Day

Nov 17, 2021 | Charity

Coloradans are generous people. The state ranks fourth in the country in charitable giving, according to a recent WalletHub study. Yet with so many worthy causes seeking help this holiday season, sifting through the appeals can be a confusing process, leading to procrastination and worries that we’re not being effective enough.

The solution? Colorado Gives Day.

Colorado Gives Day is one of the largest one-day giving movements in the country. You can go online any time at the Colorado Gives website and research the missions, programs, and finances of close to 3000 Colorado nonprofits. Then you can plan on making your seasonal or annual donation to the nonprofit of your choice on Colorado Gives Day, December 7. Colorado charities have raised more than $307 million on that date since the event began in 2010.

By encouraging donations on a particular day early in December, the program not only helps people make their donations in a timely and efficient manner; it helps them get more bang for the buck. Every nonprofit receiving a donation on Colorado Gives Day also receives a portion of an incentive fund offered by the Community First Foundation. This year the fund stands at $1.6 million, and every nonprofit you target on December 7 will get a piece of that, increasing the value of every dollar donated.

That doesn’t mean, of course, that charity should be confined to one day of the year. Our favorite nonprofits deserve continuing support. The law firm of Franklin D. Azar & Associates has a long history of giving back to the communities we serve; some of the firm’s favorite causes include youth sports programs and scholarships, the Mount Carmel Food Box program in Trinidad, and the Food for Hope program in Adams County. (This year we’re doubling down on our contribution to Food for Hope, which helps to meet the nutritional needs of school children who don’t receive enough food at home, because the need is so great.) But marking the date for Colorado Gives Day is a smart way to schedule your giving for maximum impact this holiday season.
