“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another” — Charles Dickens
Lisi Owen is an insurance bad faith attorney at Franklin D. Azar & Associates. A Denver native, she grew up in the Park Hill neighborhood of northeast Denver. Just before high school, Lisi moved with her family to Austin, Texas. After graduating high school, she attended college at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where she was on the dance team all four years of her time in school. She graduated from Rice in 2007 with a B.A. in Political Science and a focus in International Relations. In the fall of the same year, Lisi moved back to Denver to attend the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. While in law school, she led several student organizations and was a staff editor for the Denver Journal of International Law and Policy. For an academic year, Lisi was a student attorney in the law school’s Civil Rights Clinic. During summer months, she interned with a non-governmental organization in Manila, Philippines, and the Legal Aid Society of New York City. For her final semester of law school, Lisi attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School as a visiting student, where she interned and volunteered for multiple public interest organizations in Philadelphia.
Lisi has spent her entire legal career fighting for the rights of individuals who have been harmed by powerful institutional interests. Prior to joining the Azar team in 2020, Lisi worked for a law firm that represents individual and corporate policyholders in challenging insurance companies’ wrongful denial of benefits. As an insurance coverage and bad faith litigator, she has helped her clients recover millions of dollars from insurance companies who failed to pay claims made by injured people when they should have. Lisi is particularly good at identifying and leveraging complex legal problems to maximize recoveries for her clients. She is a skilled negotiator respected by Denver’s top lawyers and mediators. Lisi sits on the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Federal Advocates, a non-profit organization that works closely with federal judges in Colorado to ensure a high quality of practice in the federal courts in the state. Throughout her legal career, Lisi has been a passionate advocate for civil rights. For her work in that area she was awarded the Linda Faye Williams Prize for Social Justice from Rice University and was named the Colorado Chapter of the American Constitution Society’s Young Lawyer of the Year. In 2019 and 2020, she has earned recognition by Super Lawyers for insurance coverage litigation.
In recent years, Lisi’s passion for advocating for injured individuals has been fueled by helping her significant other seek justice from a driver who hit him with her car while he was riding his motorcycle in downtown Denver in late-2017. Throughout that process, Lisi has navigated the restitution process in a criminal case as well as participated in a trial from a whole new vantage point. Being intimately involved with an injured person going through the legal system has given her even more empathy for clients and their loved ones. Both before and after this experience Lisi has prided herself on being a compassionate and committed support person when representing people who have been injured and are being mistreated by powerful institutions.
Above all, Lisi is a committed partner and mother to her two children. She loves spending time with her family, especially outdoors. To maintain sanity, Lisi tries to practice yoga and dance as much as possible.
