John Hummel is a litigator. After graduating from the University of Arkansas School of law, he started his career as a public defender representing migrant farm workers from Mexico and out-of-work loggers from rural Oregon.
John’s farm worker clients were the hardest-working people he ever met, and his logger clients lost more than a job when the mills shut down – they lost their identities. These early lessons shaped John’s approach to justice. Every person has a unique story that informs how they arrive in the justice system, either as a plaintiff, defendant, or victim. John learned to assess people based on their entire lives, not just on the worst day of their lives.
After practicing law for twelve years, John returned to school and earned a master’s degree in International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. John then lived and worked in Africa where he was honored to lead former United States President Jimmy Carter’s operations in Liberia.
Upon returning home John worked in higher education and health care policy before being elected as district attorney in Bend, Oregon. Upon completing his service as district attorney, John moved to Colorado and practiced criminal defense and family law prior to joining Franklin D. Azar and Associates.
John is licensed to practice law in Colorado, Wyoming, Oregon, and the tribal court for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.
